Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
